Update - Steven Steel’s Anti-Free Speech Ordinance
On Tuesday, July 11, President of Toledo City Council referred to the Public Safety & Criminal Justice Committee his ordinance titled “Impeding Access to Health Care Facilities”. On Thursday, July 13 we received notice that the committee will meet on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at One Government Center - City Council Chambers 3:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss: Ord. 271-17, enact TMC Sec. 521.12, Impeding Access to Health Care Facilities. These hearings are open to the public and we want to encourage the public to weigh in. If you are interested in giving public testimony that day please let us know if we can help. We want to thank all those who took the time to contact members of Toledo City Council (TCC). We were overwhelmed by the response to our call for action. Thanks to all those who helped get the word out. Together we are making a difference for life where we live. That’s the good news, but the battle to educate and influence members of TCC has just begun. The Blade and other “abortion right advocates” will continue to spin their half-truths and false accusations. That is why we need you to continue to communicate with members of city council about your opposition to this direct assault on our freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. It is vital that they hear your voice loud and clear. You may ask why the abortion facility at 1160 W. Sylvania is pushing for this law. Since there has never been anyone cited for intentionally blocking or physically intimidating anyone from accessing that abortion mill. It is because those who are devoted to the ministry of sidewalk counseling are saving lives and depriving them from income. In addition, the monthly prayer vigils and the 40 Days for Life campaigns are also helping to save lives and change hearts and minds. Please continue to email, write or call members of the Public Safety & Criminal Justice Committee (http://toledo.oh.gov/government/city-council/council-committees) note the Chair is Kurt Young, not Theresa M. Gabriel) and the rest of TCC (http://toledo.oh.gov/government/city-counciil). Here are some tips when communicating with members of city council (or any elected official):
Speak the truth in love - you don’t have to be overly self-effacing, but never be rude or threating.
The goal is to educate and influence them with the truth. You can know with certainty on this issue and with respect to this ordinance you are advocating for truth and safeguarding some of our most basic civil rights - Free Speech and the Freedom to Assembly in the public square.
Keep your emails, phone calls or letters brief and specific. Keep it to about 3 -5 bullet points. (If you are giving public testimony, you can expand the number of bullet points, but keep it on point.)
If you have support documentation or reference materials that are in direct support of the position you are advocating, be sure to include them.
Ask them to vote no on the ordinance.
Thank them for their time.
Never underestimate your importance. As a citizen, you have power. Your power is prayer, your vote and your ability to influence others in your community. We are “A Voice for the Voiceless”. Do not let your voice be silenced.
